Tire categories explained

AT

All-Terrain (AT)

Daily driver meets weekend warrior

Aggressive enough for gravel, sand, and light mud but quiet enough for highway use. The most popular choice for overlanders and dual-purpose builds. Tread life is typically 50,000–70,000 km.

Best for

  • Overland touring
  • Gravel roads
  • Light mud
  • Daily driver

Popular options

BFGoodrich KO2, Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Toyo Open Country AT III, Cooper Discoverer AT3

RT

Rugged Terrain (RT)

Between AT and MT — serious grip, liveable noise

Larger tread blocks than AT with more void ratio. Better in loose dirt, rocks, and wet conditions. Noisier than AT on-road. Good compromise for rigs that spend 40%+ of time off-road.

Best for

  • Rocky trails
  • Soft sand
  • Moderate mud
  • Overland with teeth

Popular options

Falken Wildpeak RT01, Nitto Ridge Grappler, Toyo Open Country RT

MT

Mud-Terrain (MT)

Purpose-built for serious off-road

Maximum void ratio for self-cleaning in deep mud, rock crawling grip, and extreme terrain. Loud on-road, short tread life, and firm ride. Best suited to weekend rigs or dedicated off-road vehicles.

Best for

  • Deep mud
  • Rock crawling
  • Boggy tracks
  • Dedicated off-road

Popular options

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain KM3, Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MT, Nitto Trail Grappler
